Think of this as an air-management device. At high speeds, a large volume of air travels along the sides of the vehicle. Without this side splitter, some of this air is allowed to "roll" underneath the rocker panels. This ends up affecting the underbody airflow - this is not a good thing. We want to keep the underbody airflow as smooth as possible and make sure to keep extraneous amounts of air (such as air from the sides of the vehicle) from entering the underbody area.
